The Right Arm of the Saint I (聖者の右腕篇I Seija no Migiude Hen Ichi?) is the first episode of the Season 1 Strike the Blood anime.

Synopsis[]

Itogami Island is a manmade island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where summer never ends. A high school student at Saikai Academy, Kojou Akatsuki, is on his way home from studying with his classmates, Asagi Aiba and Motoki Yaze, when he notices a girl in the Saikai Academy middle school uniform following him.

Plot[]

The episode opens with a conversation about the being known as the Fourth Progenitor, a vampire—the world’s strongest vampire that no one can control. A cruel and nefarious being, the Fourth Progenitor does not desire domination but rules over twelve familiars, avatars of calamity, in the city of Itogami Island. This city is a Demon Sanctuary where supernatural beings exist, free to live as citizens.

An unnamed couple discuss the Fourth Progenitor. A girl comments that it isn’t unusual in this city, Itogami Island. She then mentions, more importantly, what the boy thought of her yukata (summer kimono). Suddenly, her sandal strap breaks. Kojou Akatsuki, passing by them, turns back when he notices the sandal strap break. Seeing her neck, he feels a vampiric blood-sucking urge but controls himself, resulting in a nosebleed. He then leaves, muttering, “Gimme a break.”

The scene then shifts to the morning, where Kojou laments the burden of numerous summer make-up exams. Despite missing several classes and tests, the protagonist explains that his unique physical condition makes early morning tests difficult. He also criticizes Asagi for their inability to wake up on time. There is a playful exchange between Asagi, Kojou, and Yaze about studying and debts.

Asagi mentions going to a part-time job while Kojou finishes his homework. Yaze also leaves, saying he has already finished copying the homework and that, without Asagi, there is no point in studying there. Kojou then leaves the family restaurant after they have gone. He checks the money he has on him and complains that it won’t even be enough to ride the monorail, wondering what he will do for lunch tomorrow.

Kojou walks around, complaining about the heat, saying that it will burn him up, scorch him, and turn him into ash. Looking at a vending machine, he sees a young girl behind him in the reflection. The scene shifts to inside a mall, where the young girl continues following Kojou. Noticing her, Kojou wonders to himself if he is being followed. He then runs away, with the young girl chasing him, seeing him enter an arcade.

Inside the arcade, Kojou notices the young girl and her school uniform. He wonders if she is from his middle school and if she is Nagisa’s—his little sister’s—friend. Realizing he is not going to lose her anytime soon, he says, “It can’t be helped,” and walks towards her. They bump into each other. Both Kojou and the young girl are surprised. The girl prepares herself for battle, calling Kojou the Fourth Primogenitor. Kojou, surprised, looks around, then back at the young girl, who nervously prepares herself, sweating.

Abruptly, Kojou acts like a foreigner, speaking Italian. The young girl, surprised, responds with “Huh?” Kojou tells her he is a passing Italian and does not know much Japanese, then walks away. The young girl, snapping back, chases after him, saying, “Wait a minute, Akatsuki Kojou!” and grabs his hoodie. Kojou looks back and says she has the wrong guy, then walks away. Behind him, the young girl wonders aloud, “The wrong guy? W-what?”

While walking, Kojou hears two men making a move on the young girl. The two men are hitting on her, while she rebuffs them. Kojou notices their demon registration bands, realizing they are demons. The two men continue to hit on the girl, who tells them to move away, annoyed, and tries to walk past them. One of the men, annoyed, grabs her, telling her to come with them. Kojou tries to stop them, but before he can, the other man flips the young girl’s skirt.

Seeing this, Kojou abruptly stops. Angered, the young girl hits the man grabbing her and uses Young Lightning on the other, passing out and revealing he was a beastman. Kojou, surprised at her strength, sees the young girl send the beastman flying. The other man realizes who she is, saying she is an Attack Mage. He then reveals his race, with Kojou mentioning he is a D-type, a vampire.

The young girl comments that running into a D-type in broad daylight is truly Itogami Island. The vampire summons his beast vassal. An announcement comes over the area, warning that magic power has been detected and instructing civilians to evacuate. The young girl is surprised that he is using a beast vassal in a place like this. She then prepares her weapon in her guitar case, calling it Sekkarou. Using her spear, she eliminates the beast vassal and tries to attack the vampire.

Kojou steps in, hitting Sekkarou. The young girl, surprised to see it is Akatsuki Kojou, retreats, backing away and jumps on top of a car. Kojou tells the vampire to get lost and take his companion with him, instructing him to learn from this, not to hit on middle school girls again, and not to use beast vassals in a city. The vampire thanks Kojou and runs away. Kojou then talks to the young girl, telling her she went too far, but the young girl asks why he interfered.

Kojou then tells her that any normal civilian who saw a fight in front of them would want to stop it. The young girl, surprised that he used the word normal, wonders aloud, “Normal?” She then comments that no normal person could stop the Schnnewalzer with their bare hands. Kojou tells her that that’s not the point.

The young girl points out that the vampire used magic in a public place and even employed a beast vassal, saying it was a clear violation of the Holy Grounds Treaty and affirming that no one would object if he were killed. Kojou counters that she was the one who struck first. The young girl tries to deny it but then remembers that she did strike first, embarrassed and blushing. Kojou then says that trying to kill someone because he saw her panties was out of line.

The young girl, surprised and realizing he saw it too, gets angry. Kojou continues talking about her behavior, not noticing her reaction. The young girl then trembly asks him if he too saw it. Kojou, surprised, tries to explain, but a strong wind sweeps through, flipping the girl’s skirt again while she is on top of a car. Seeing this in front of him, Kojou is stunned. The young girl, surprised, pushes her skirt down, her face blushing.

Kojou is surprised, and then the girl points her spear at him, shouting and asking why he was looking again. Kojou, still surprised, tries to explain that it was beyond his control, saying that her standing on top of a car, the wind blowing her skirt up, and his eyes being drawn to her flipped skirt were all acts of nature that he could not do anything about. The young girl then says, “Enough,” retracts her spear, and gets down from the car while holding her skirt down and picking up her guitar case.

How dirty

How dirty

Kojou watches this and tries to talk to her, but the girl just tells him he’s dirty while blushing, then walks away. Kojou, seeing this, thinks of leaving the place as well, but then notices a wallet on the ground. He picks it up and reads the name “Himeragi Yukina” on the ID inside the wallet.

The scene then moves to the armored cars of the Island Guard. As Kojou walks around the island, he narrates, explaining that this is Itogami Island—an island located in the Pacific Ocean, 300 kilometers south of Tokyo, constructed from carbon fiber, resin, metal, and magic. Also known as the Demon District. On this manmade island, built far from the Japanese mainland, beastmen, spirits, half-demons, manmade life-forms, and vampires—all manner of magical beings pushed to the brink of extinction by habitat destruction and battles with humans—are authorized by the government to live here for protection and research purposes.

As Kojou walks past a caged basketball court, he narrates, “I, Akatsuki Kojou, am a totally normal high school student living on this island. Yes… I was a totally normal high school student, until three months ago.” He mutters, “The Fourth Progenitor, huh?” then, growing annoyed, says he doesn’t feel like it. He picks up a basketball outside the cage and tosses it toward the hoop.

The next day, Saikai Academy is shown. Kojou, inside the middle school teachers’ faculty room, asks a teacher if Sasasaki-sensei from Class C is present today. Kojou looks disappointed. The teacher asks if he wants to pass something along and says he’ll hold onto it for now. Kojou replies that he’ll just come back later, saying it’s a sort of bothersome thing, while holding Himeragi Yukina’s wallet behind him.

The scene then shifts to Kojou walking along a walkway. He asks if there is any contact information in the wallet, commenting that he has no choice and telling himself to spare him the privacy-invasion lecture. He finally checks the wallet, noting that it is a pretty well-organized wallet and that it smells good. A flashback shows yesterday’s incident, when Yukina Himeragi’s panty was revealed due to a gust of wind. Snapping back to the present, Kojou suddenly feels his vampiric blood-sucking urge, his eyes reddening. He tells himself that he cannot get turned on or let the blood-sucking urge take over, wiping his nosebleed and drinking his own blood, while wondering aloud if there is anything he can do.

Suddenly, Yukina appears and speaks: “Smelling a girl’s wallet and getting turned on? You really are a dangerous person.” Kojou, surprised, says her name. Yukina responds, and Kojou asks what she is doing here. She retorts that it’s her line while calling him Akatsuki-senpai and mentions that this is the middle school building. Kojou explains that he came to return her wallet. Yukina accuses him of smelling her wallet and getting so excited that he had a nosebleed. Kojou denies this while wiping his nosebleed, saying that it was because he was reminded of yesterday.

Yukina covers her skirt with her hands and tells him to forget what happened yesterday. Kojou replies that it is easy for her to say, but Yukina insists on forgetting it. She moves to take back her wallet, but Kojou dodges, saying that she must tell him something first—about who she is and why she was following him. Yukina is shocked that he noticed she was following him. Kojou, exasperated, tells her, “You thought I wouldn’t notice that?”

Yukina begrudgingly accepts and asks if he is telling her to take it back by force. Kojou steps back a few steps. As Yukina prepares to take back her wallet, Kojou nervously waits—but just as she is about to draw her Schneewalzer out of her guitar case, her stomach rumbles. Kojou, surprised, says, “Huh?” and asks if she is hungry. Yukina reddens, embarrassed. Kojou asks if she hasn’t eaten since yesterday and realizes it is because she doesn’t have her wallet.

Kojou returns her wallet but tells her to at least buy him lunch, saying it is because the one who found her wallet has the right to expect that much as a reward. Yukina is baffled.

The scene shifts to a fast-food chain called Burger Shop. Inside, Yukina is eating a hamburger, saying “Itadakimasu.” Kojou, surprised, comments that she eats hamburgers like normal people. Yukina, confused, asks him what he means.[Note 1] Kojou explains that she does not seem like the kind of person who would come to a place like this. Annoyed, Yukina asks if he is making fun of her and explains that towns within High God Forest are not big cities, but they still have hamburgers.

Kojou asks if that was the school she came from. Yukina further explains that it was only on the cover, and that it was actually a Lion King Organization training school. During this conversation, a TV news broadcast in the background reports on demon serial murders.

Yukina asks Kojou if he knows about the Lion King Organization, but Kojou denies it. Yukina is surprised, and while she has ketchup on her left cheek, she asks him why he does not know. Kojou says he has never heard the name, points to her cheek, and gives her a tissue. Yukina touches her cheek, blushes, and wipes it with the tissue. She then explains that the Lion King Organization exists to prevent large-scale magic disasters and magic terrorism. She says that she is a Sword Shaman and that she was sent here to observe him.

Kojou, surprised, asks her why. Yukina, confused by his reaction, asks him why he is asking and whether he really does not know. She explains that Progenitors themselves are on equal footing with a nation’s military forces, and naturally that includes the Fourth Progenitor. In other words, Kojou’s very existence is treated the same as an act of terror or war. Kojou laments that he is not even considered a living being anymore.

Yukina then asks him what he plans to do here on Itogami Island. She asks if there is a reason he is concealing his identity and hiding in a Demon District—for example, using Itogami Island as a foothold to build his own Dominion. Kojou responds that he lived on Itogami Island even before he became a vampire. Before he can finish, Yukina suddenly stands up and says, “It can’t be true,” explaining that for a normal human to become a vampire—and a Progenitor no less—they would need to gain immortality through the secret spell of the lost gods, or—

She stops when she notices the gazes of other people around them and sits back down. Kojou looks around awkwardly and laughs. Yukina then asks if he consumed a Progenitor to become one himself. Kojou replies that he cannot explain it in detail, saying that that idiot forced this irritating condition on him. Yukina repeats, “Idiot?” Kojou clarifies that he means the Fourth Progenitor, the previous Kaleid Blood.

Yukina asks why the Fourth Progenitor chose Kojou as an heir. Kojou tries to explain, but he suddenly gets a headache. A flashback shows the previous Fourth Progenitor. While suffering from the headache, Kojou crushes a soda can in his hand. Yukina, worried, asks him what is wrong. Kojou explains that he no longer has memories of what happened, and that when he tries to remember, he gets a headache. Yukina says she understands.

Yukina reassures Kojou

Yukina reassures Kojou

Yukina then stands up and wipes the spilled drink from Kojou’s pants. While doing so, she says that she was ordered by the Lion King Organization to eliminate him if he seemed dangerous. Kojou, shocked, stutters and mutters, “E-eliminate?” She then realizes that he lacks self-awareness he does not fully understand how precarious his position is. Yukina smiles and says that there is no need to worry—if anything happens, she can take care of it with Sekkarou. Kojou shouts, asking what she means by “take care of it?”

Yukina then asks what he plans to do after this. Kojou replies that he plans to finish his summer homework. Yukina says she will come with him and asks if she should come along. Kojou asks if she plans to stick around forever. Yukina smiles and says, “Of course,” explaining that she came here to observe him. Kojou is left stunned, his mouth hanging open.

He then thinks to himself that he needs to face the fact that he has become the Fourth Progenitor. Looking up at the ceiling, he mutters, “Gimme a break.”

The scene zooms in on Kojou’s eye, revealing a destroyed district submerged underwater, accompanied by the echoing sound of a large bell. The scene then shifts again, moving away from the underwater ruins to a devastated area surrounded by destroyed rubble and raging fire. Kojou is shown holding a crossbow, calling out Avrora’s name and telling her to stop. Avrora responds to Kojou, saying that she granted his wish and now it is his turn.

The flashback continues further, showing a younger Kojou with Avrora after she is freed. The scene then returns to the devastated area, where Avrora says that she leaves everything to him, calling his name, Akatsuki Kojou, while gently holding his cheek. Kojou grabs her outstretched hand as blazing fire surrounds them. Avrora then disappears.

Kojou cries out, clutching his chest. Another flashback shows his memory of Avrora standing by the ocean, the wind blowing her hair. Kojou then shouts, lamenting.

At night, a young blue-haired, blue-eyed girl is shown alongside a tall armored man wearing a monocle-like object.

Notes[]

  1. Kojou was surprised that Himeragi ate a hamburger like a normal person, because he had assumed she was an ojou-sama—a refined young lady from a wealthy or high-class family. In the light novel, he even expected her to ask where the spoon and fork were, though this detail was omitted in the anime.
