Magna Ataraxia Research Incorporated (マグナ・アタラクシア・リサーチ Maguna Atarakushia Risāchi) known mostly as (MAR) was a giant conglomerate with branches all over the Far East. It is a corporate group formed of a number of sorcerous product manufacturers with global reach, and is one of the world's leading magic industrial complexes. Shahryar Ren was the president of MAR. One of their laboratories is located at Itogami Island, where Mimori Akatsuki works.

Following Shahryar Ren's invasion of Nod, MAR had been dissolved, with each individual division announced as a brand-new, freestanding corporation.[1]

Information[]

Magna Ataraxia Research Incorporated, or MAR, was a conglomerate formed of multiple sorcerous product manufacturers with global reach. It was an industrial giant that made everything from pills for the common cold to military fighter jets. The MAR lab site at Itogami Island is said to be quite large, their buildings connected to one another formed a giant three-dimensional complex. The lab is big enough to have almost one thousand researchers working there.[2] In one corner of the complex is a cylinder-shaped building, which is a series of extravagant resort-styled apartments. These apartments were meant for hosting guests and researchers from off the island. Mimori Akatsuki is known to use one of these apartments for her own personal use, sleeping there the vast majority of the time.[3]

MAR also employed robots using sorcerous circuitry and shikigami as guards for their facility. They were excellent workers that never slacked off or let anything slip—unlike humans.[2]

Plot[]

The Eternal Banquet[]

MAR had assisted the Order of the End, a sorcerous criminal organization. MAR had interfered with a Demon Sanctuary’s neutrality, instigating the civil conflict known as the Electoral War. During this dispute, they had made use of the captured Fourth Primogenitor, opening the gate to Nod —all were crystal-clear breaches of the Holy Grounds Treaty, so MAR could not avoid an outpouring of international scorn.

Dawn Triumphant[]

Various national governments had quietly banded together to begin attacking MAR through legal or even extra-legal means: the freezing of assets, the sealing of factories and offices, arrests of executives and employees, and even direct attacks by force of arms. However, for all the economic power it could boast, MAR was a civilian corporation in the end—a leaf in the wind against the force of a tornado. In the battle against the Holy Ground Treaty Organization, MAR strongholds were being taken over across the globe. In two short days, the corporation had lost virtually all of its capabilities. The last stronghold remaining was its headquarters, Arnica Quad.

Divisions[]

Itogami Laboratory[]

Magna Ataraxia Research, or MAR, was one of the world’s few sorcerous manufacturing conglomerates. Even just the laboratory it had established within Itogami City was an enormous enterprise employing nearly a thousand researchers. It was designed with considerable security features in mind, like security pods constructed with sorcerous circuitry and colorful miniature robots about the size of a garbage can. Somehow, their rounded external appearance was humorous and adorable. However, intended for security, this was simply for show. On the inside, MAR security pods were military-grade unmanned attack robots, prototype weapons developed with anti-demonic combat in mind.[4] MAR’s Itogami Laboratory was constructed in the district at the center of Island North. Including the affiliate hospital to which it was connected, it harbored nearly a thousand researchers, making it one of the largest research organizations within the city. To the sorcerous corporate conglomerate MAR, the results of its Demon Sanctuary research constituted critical information one might even call its corporate lifeline. Analysis of demonic abilities and biology and employing this to develop industrial and medical products—it was said that the horde of products originating from Itogami Island constituted over sixty percent of the massive corporation that MAR had become. Naturally, entry points into the laboratory’s interior came furnished with a security presence rivaling that of a military base. Security was especially strict for the highly profitable medical department. In addition to armed security pods that kept watch twenty-four/seven, it came with demonic security personnel patrols and even magical fortifications, pretty much the finest anti-intrusion measures anyone could imagine.[5]

Electoral War Administration Committee[]

A neutral organization assigned to work related to administering and regulating the Electoral War.[6] MAR had signed a contract with the Order of the End to participate in the administration of the Electoral War as a neutral party. Its chief roles were compensating for combat damages, provisioning food and other supplies, and rescuing and treating the injured. “Securing the wounded” meant transporting them by hospital ship to an anchorage somewhere on New Itogami Island.[7]

Arnica Quad[]

Arnica Quad—the corporate headquarters for Magna Ataraxia Research floating in the Pacific Ocean’s Celebes Sea. Incorporating a small island from the Talauds to form a single giant facility, Arnica Quad was more akin to a military fortress than an office building. Connected to branch companies and factories in every corner of the world via its electronic network, it had complete control of its own communications net, allowing it to issue detailed instructions in mere milliseconds. This capability was so crucial that it had amply earned its status as the “brain” of the multinational corporate conglomerate known as MAR. Accordingly, security for Arnica Quad was heavy. It possessed independent defensive combat capabilities ranging from patrol boats to fighter aircraft, and each of the forty-six operators working in the command room had a strict military air about them. In that context, Ladli’s presence with her theatrical outfit looked extremely out of place. Not a single person would dare reproach her for this.[8]

Equipment and Technology[]

MAR, a renowned company in the field of technology and innovation, has made a name for itself by developing a wide range of products that cater to various industries. From pharmaceuticals to fighter aircraft, some of the products are the following:

Teloportation Device: MAR owns sorcerous devices resembling a brooch. This was a teleportation device using MAR’s latest technology. The downsides were that it depleted a vast amount of magical energy and could only jump to preregistered coordinates, but the convenience of a nonsorcerer being able to use teleportation so easily was overwhelming.[9]

Cursed Rounds: The bullets were small caliber, high-velocity cursed rounds made with cutting-edge platinum-rhodium tips, able to inflict lasting damage upon demons.[4]

MAR-manufactured security pods: MAR-manufactured security pods, armed with anti-demon small-caliber machine guns and tear gas, for military use by rights. They looked like metal cylinders, like wastebaskets with the backs turned toward them. The diameter of one was eighteen centimeters at the most. They probably stood at a hundred and twenty centimeters or so. The way their eyelike lenses darted to and fro seemed comical, even adorable. However, the bellies of the wastebaskets had equipment attached that was not adorable in the slightest. Each was outfitted with an antipersonnel machine gun.[10]

MAR Zeta 9: The device was no bigger than a small smartphone model, yet its lens was very large. From all appearances, it was an expensive, state-of-the-art camera. It’s water-resistant and impact-resistant—the sensor’s HQ is connected to the Net, and the imaging system specs are pretty high up, too, but the real selling point is definitely the new model of DSP. These have proprietary MAC units They say processing efficiency is increased by two orders of magnitude. For all its high specs, the MAR digital camera had numerous install options that needed to be set, and inputting all that was a chore. Using a laptop greatly reduced the time and trouble involved.[11]

Influence[]

MAR—Magna Ataraxia Research Inc.—was the leading face among East Asia’s giant corporate concerns. It researched and developed a wide range of products, from pharmaceuticals to fighter aircraft, and constituted one of the world’s few sorcerous manufacturing conglomerates.[6]MAR had accumulated so much power in its expansion into a giant international conglomerate that it was viewed as an eyesore across the globe. They employ a large number of skilled specialists, possess the know-how to move as an organization, and also possess the financial power to hire the right people and the technology to allow people to live prosperous lives.[8]

Trivia[]

  • MAR’s employee cafeteria is famous. It’s listed as a hidden gem in Itogami Island’s Gourmet Guide.[4]
  • On both military and economic fronts, the only chance of defying the Holy Grounds Treaty Organization military rested with MAR and its vast number of Beast Vassal Warheads.[12]
  • As an international conglomerate and a financial sponsor of the Gigafloat Management Corporation, even the Island Guard and Attack Mages cannot easily lay a hand upon the group.[13]
  • "Magna Ataraxia" is a Latin phrase that roughly translates to "great tranquility" or "profound peace." "Magna" means "great" or "profound," and "ataraxia" refers to a state of serene calmness or tranquility, often associated with Greek philosophy, particularly the Epicurean school. So, "Magna Ataraxia" suggests a state of deep inner peace or tranquility.
    • Which is ironic, considering that the president of Magna Ataraxia Research sought to bring Deva rule to the world through force, using the Beast Vassal Warhead.
